This is Georgi Korfonozov, 15 year-old, from the town of Yambol.
His problems began when he was almost a baby. At the age of year and a half the serious diagnosis “Total disorder of the urinary system” was stated. The child survived several complex operations at the Multi-profile hospital for active treatment and emergency aid “Pirogov” in 1993, including one for removal of the left kidney.
Since then his struggle for survival has been constant. Georgi is not allowed to eat pizza, hot-dog or chocolate like other children are. Even more, he is forbidden to eat most of the fruit and vegetables. He keeps a very strict and unvaried diet and takes many supportive drugs; his blood is regularly tested and he undergoes many operations and manipulations (so far 11 times). As a whole he does everything that could be done in order to preserve his only working kidney. No matter all this (or maybe because he has to lead a long-year struggle for his health) Georgi is a very strong-minded person - last year he got excellent marks on the examinations after 7-th grade and was admitted at the most-desired class with profile “Computer science” at the Mathematical school in Yambol. So, it is evident that he is well acquainted with Internet; we invited him to register at the site an he did it immediately.

Present time
Despite the unbelievable efforts and discipline, the child’s only kidney is about to stop functioning. This is why doctors prepare him for hemodialysis. It hasn’t started yet because of his mother’s struggle to keep the renal indicators on the upper level. Georgi needs urgent kidney transplantation abroad. There is not a donor in the family. The blood group of his mother Zhana is compatible with his one, but she suffers from an urological diseaseand is not suitable for a donor.
Bureaucracy
The specialist at the Multi-profile hospital for active treatment “Alexandrovska” prepared a Record for treatment abroad for Georgi a year ago - on October 04, 2006, and he was directed to the Central commission for treatment abroad of the Ministry of Public Health. Three months later officials from the Ministry replied to Georgi’s physician - Prof. Panchev that the record was sent back because he didn’t state two clinics abroad where transplantation could be performed.
On September 25, 2007 a new record was composed and delivered to the Ministry of Public Health. At the record acceptance it was explained to the parents that a reply wouldn’t be sent to them, and that after consideration of the case by the Commission for treatment abroad of the Ministry of Public Health the documents would be automatically transferred to the “Fund for treatment of children abroad”. It was also stated that the family wouldn’t receive any financial means until they presented two offers from foreign clinics. The parents do their best to receive an offer from Sankt Petersburg, but their efforts are unsuccessful so far. In Germany, the other country stated in the record, transplantations on Bulgarian citizens from cadaver donors are not performed.
Financial means
The base price for performing a transplantation in Russia is 35 000 Euro. In addition to this sum approximately 15 000 Euro shall be necessary for hospital stay and examinations at the clinic while a suitable donor is found.
In Germany and Austria the sum needed shall be between 70 000 and 100 000 Euro.
The hope
Zhana Korfonozova told us with tears in her eyes that after the last tests, Georgi was depressed, sometimes even desperate. He is afraid that he may not graduate, become a student or live a normal life. ‘Life is leaving me slowly and painfully…”, he uttered recently.
Zhoro, don’t give up, my friend! Don’t talk like this anymore! There are wonderful people in this country, who are going to help you to have your chance.
