Every child is unique. Some children are unique with their smile, others with their talent or with something else different and extraordinary.
The seven-year-old boy Georgi from Bulgaria is also unique, but with his diagnosis. He suffers from a very rare disease – Short Bowel Syndrome. Since he was born he has spent most of his life in a hospital. His small intestine is extremely short. It cannot absorb food and the boy does not receive enough nutrients through the food. Georgi must get nutrition intravenously in order to keep him alive.
The Doctors in Bulgaria are very concerned: There is no case in the country with such a short small intestine. The only way to save his life is a surgical procedure to extend Georgi’s own intestine; this procedure cannot be performed in Bulgaria.
Professor Heung Bae Kim, M.D. Director of Pediatric Transplant Center at Children’s Hospital in Boston created and performed the first STEP procedure in the world for Short Bowel Syndrome with his colleague Professor Tom Jacksis in 2002. He learned about the boy from Bulgaria and confirmed that surgery can be done at his hospital. Since 2002 both Doctors have performed 9 STEP procedures at Children’s Hospital in Boston. This new and very rare surgical procedure is also very expensive. The cost of surgery and the treatment at Children's Hospital in Boston for 6 months is approximately $700,000, and it is impossible for the family to cover this amount.

But the parents are very encouraged by the prognosis of the Doctors in Boston that the boy has a chance to recover after the surgery and to live a normal life as a healthy child. They are currently in the process of campaigning to raise the funds for their son's surgery and the hospital stay in the United States. Since this is a very rare case and it is a very urgent matter, the surgery should be done as soon as possible.

The family from Bulgaria believes that there are no limits for the people’s kindness and generosity. They also believe that all these people can make a big difference in Georgi’s life – the little boy whose only wish for Christmas was to be a healthy boy.
