The blond baby you see on the photo is Natalia Dimitrova. She is 6 months old. She is born with a left eye anophthalmia (absence of the globe and ocular tissue from the orbit). It is a rare defect that occurs in 1 of 100 000 newborns. In 2/3 of the children born with anophthalmia other illnesses exist as well.
Fortunately Natalia has no other health problems for now.

The ocular orbits are very important in facial development. Conformers or implants are used to expand the eye socket and to ensure the proper growth of the face. There are different approaches since every child is different. One factor is weather the child is able to see any light.
In the USA and UK the first conformer is inserted when the child is 6 weeks old. Periodically conformers are changed until the eye socket and orbit become its normal size. Then, when the child is around 2 years old a prosthetic eye can be made.
Natalia is 26 weeks and no treatment or management has been started yet.
On October 11th, 2007, three months ago, the Committee for Treating children abroad, at the Ministry of Health approves that the child must be send abroad urgently since there is no treatment of anophthalmia in Bulgaria. All documents are send to the “Fund for Healing Children”. The Fund must pay for the entire treatment abroad.
Dr. Dobrev, Head of the Fund insists Dr Krastinova, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon working in France, to perform an operation. Until today Dr. Krastinova has not sent an offer to the Fund.
Seeing that precious time is lost waiting for Dr. Krastinova to send an offer, the parents contact Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, UK. It has a specialized Microphtalmia and Anophthalmia Clinic that has developed own eye prosthesis.
Dr. Nicola Ragge responds immediately and sends an offer for treatment of Natalia on November 19th 2007 (read it here).
Some of the procedures in the offer (like MRI of kidneys and chromosome tests) will not be done since they are made in Bulgaria.
Thus the price for the first counseling and treatment in Moorfields Eye Hospital amounts to 5000 GBP or ……..USD. Natalia will have to visit the clinic at least 5 times until she is 2 years old. The parents handed a copy of the offer to the Fund for Healing Children.
Until today the Fund has not responded.
And Natalia is growing…… Her Mum and Dad cannot wait anymore. They have already seriously delayed Natalia’s treatment waiting for the State to take care of one of its children.
Therefore they appeal for help to all of us that care for the child’s life and health and do not comprehend it as just a boring paperwork.
